Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a haul road and an area of clay extraction and tipping identified that the surrounding area contained a high concentration of known archaeological features and artefacts from a variety of periods, including four Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Of two alternative routes for the haul road, the preferred route followed the line of a Roman road, traces of which had been identified at several points along its course. A large scatter of flints containing implements dated to the Upper Palaeolithic had been revealed during ploughing in a field beside the Roman road, and a possible Bronze Age settlement site adjacent to the road had been found in the 19th century. Two scatters of Neolithic material lay in fields adjacent to the proposed fill site. Other remains recorded in the area included Neolithic monuments such as the Arbor Low henge, scatters of Neolithic artefacts, barrows of Bronze Age, early medieval and Neolithic or Bronze Age date, Bronze Age artefacts, a Roman lamp and several features of unknown date, identified on aerial photographs. A disused railway tunnel also lay near the proposal area. It was concluded that a programme of field evaluation would be necessary, and it was recommended that further alternative haul road routes should be considered, as the present preferred route was particularly archaeologically sensitive.
