Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a new ride within a theme park identified that it lay within the interior of an Iron Age hillfort, although it was situated outside the Scheduled ramparts. It also lay within the Registered Park of Alton Towers. Archaeological sites recorded in the surrounding area had included the findspots of a Bronze Age sword, Roman coins and an Anglo Saxon sword, as well as a Bronze Age barrow, the remains of a 12th century castle, a site occupied by water mills from the medieval period to the 19th century, and an 18th century lead smelting mill. The proposal site lay outside what were considered to be the areas of best-preserved archaeological deposits within the hillfort. It nonetheless had a high archaeological potential, as it appeared to have remained relatively undisturbed until the 20th century. The north-eastern part of the site was considered to have the highest potential for surviving deposits, as remains could have been protected from later disturbances such as the construction of a car park by probable 19th century dumping. The south-western end of the site appeared to have a lower potential due to the fact that any archaeological deposits which may have existed in the area would not have been protected by 19th century make-up. The bed-rock in the southern area appeared to lie close to the 1990s surface, possibly reflecting the removal of potential archaeological horizons during construction of the car park. It was recommended that, since the proposed development would result in the loss of any archaeological deposits which could have survived, an evaluation should be carried out. [AIP]
