Abstract: |
A desk-top study was carried out on land with known archaeological potential. Previous assessments had indicated that the area may have been occupied from the prehistoric period and documentary evidence suggested that the medieval church of St. Cuthbert, which lay close to the site, had it's origins in the Anglo-Saxon period. The present farm contained a number of surviving farm buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The study identified the probable types of archaeological deposit that may have survived in the area and gave an assessment of the impact of the proposed development on the archaeology of the site.
