Abstract:
A second phase of assessment was carried out at Willingham to answer questions arising from the first phase; these were to extend the investigation area to the north and south in order to narrow down the extent of the Saxon remains, and to determine the nature of a number of features partially revealed in the first phase and to determine whether or not they were structural. The impression of the first assessment was confirmed by the second - that the development area was sited on or near a formerly unknown Saxon settlement. Saxon remains were found in all but one of the new trenches, demonstrating that the settlement must extend beneath the standing farm buildings. The archaeology was very shallow, consequently the surviving archaeology was considered to be particularly vulnerable in the course of development. The more ephemeral features may well have already been destroyed. The layout of the structures, apparently in relation to High Street, and the subsequent shift of focus towards Church Street, suggested that this was not the direct ancestral village of medieval and modern Willingham.
