Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site as part of a planning application relating to the redevelopment of the site. The site lay in an area of considerable historical importance. The site lay immediately outside of the Roman forum on part of the major east-west Roman road. Roadside clay and timber buildings and Boudiccan fire deposits may have still survived within the site. Large stone buildings had been recorded from adjacent sites dating to both the later Roman and medieval periods. Deposits relating to the Great Fire of 1666 may also have been present, as well as other post-medieval development. The highest archaeological potential was along the new Lombard Street frontage where new foundations would impact upon an area of archaeological deposits. It was possible that the bases of some features may have survived and would be impacted upon by the new building on the eastern and southern areas. This could be regarded as a zone of medium archaeological potential. [Au(adp)] |
