Abstract:
<summary>An archaeological assessment of the route of the proposed A435 Norton Lenchwick By-Pass was undertaken. The assessment focused on the part of the route in the county of Hereford & Worcester (in total about 4.4km), the aim being to supply information for an assessment and evaluation of the entire route to be undertaken by Warwickshire Museum. A preliminary consultation with the County Sites and Monuments Record had identified three sites of archaeological interest within the 1km-wide road corridor; this figure was increased to 61 sites as a result of the desk-based research undertaken. There is one Scheduled Ancient Monument within the corridor (County Monument No Here & Worc 295; HWCM2761): the scheduled area focuses on a crop mark of two parallel ditches with one end terminating as an ellipse; the crop mark appears to continue into the area of HWCM2763 (and possibly beyond), itself consisting of further crop marks which, with others (HWCM2784-2788), potentially forms an integrated group of prehistoric sites of considerable significance. The majority of sites within the corridor are Listed Buildings (32); none of those whose location is known are within 100m of the proposed road centre line. Two Conservation Areas (villages of Harvington and Norton) are also well outside of the area likely to be directly physically affected. {italon}Au(adp){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM2691, 2757, 2759, 2761, 2763, 2781 - 2788, 2848, 12968, 15415 - 15460
