Abstract: |
The evaluation uncovered evidence for medieval (13th to 15th century) activity on the site in the form of soil layer (517). The copper alloy waste may have indicated some form of metalworking in the vicinity. Pit 503, sealed by the soil may also have been of a similar date. The evaluation also produced evidence for early post-medieval (probably late 16th to 18th century) activity, in the form of pit 506, culvert 505 and the later soil layer 516. Later post-medieval activity was represented by the stone buildings on the site. Many of the standing buildings (e.g. 75 Fore Street) were likely to date to the early 19th century at the latest. The bridge over the stream and its integral stone building pre-dated the excavated cottages and were almost certainly constructed in the 18th-century. [Au(adp)] |
