Abstract:
An archaeological desktop assessment was undertaken of land on Conygarth Hill, north of Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire. The line of Dere Street formed the eastern boundary of the site and the existing A1 defined the northern and western edge of the study area. The southern edge of the site stopped short of Leeming Bar industrial estate. Cropmarks of a trackway and enclosures of possible prehistoric date were recorded c.300m to the south of the study area at Leeming Bar but they did not appear to continue northwards into the site.To the east of the site burials of unknown date were recorded during levelling of Leases Road, and further burials were found in the vicinity of Leases Hall to the north of the site. The precise location and distribution of the burials remains uncertain but they may be associated with the line of the Roman road. No archaeological features, however, were recorded on the eastern side of Leases Road during the insertion of a narrow water mains trench. Reference to early maps indicated that existing field boundaries and the course of surrounding roads remain unchanged since early cartographic evidence (dated to 1769). Several large quarries in the area were recorded and a site appraisal indicated the unrecorded disturbance of land by this activity, most notable in the north and eastern areas of the site. [Au(abr)]
