Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation followed by an enhanced watching brief was undertaken during the removal of topsoil and overburden at Welland Bank Pit. The work was part of an ongoing programme of archaeological examination. A series of large ditches were revealed which apparently defined settlement enclosures and a number of circular buildings. The boundaries seemed to have been altered several times before going out of use. Groups of large pits were then located on the lines of the backfilled enclosure ditches and numerous gullies crossed the area. Finds dated the settlement and associated activity to the Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age periods. Briquetage suggested that salt-making took place, perhaps on a small-scale, domestic level. An ancient stream course, perhaps of Ice Age date, was also recognised. [Au(abr)] |
