Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site was required prior to the determination of planning permission for the refurbishment of the existing building. The site lay within a Conservation Area and within an Area of Special Archaeological Priority, in respect of Lundenwic (Middle Saxon London) and Thorney Island. Documentary, geological, archival and cartographic sources indicated that the site had archaeological potential. Little evidence was known for prehistoric or Roman occupation in the immediate area but the site lay within the important Saxon settlement known as Lundenwic, c. AD 680-860. The report recommended that an archaeological excavation be undertaken to lower the basement level with a watching brief on the underpinning works. [Au(adp)] |
