Abstract:
<summary>The City Environment Department requested a desk-based assessment prior to the submission of a planning application. The site currently forms part of a car park, not far from the area once occupied by St Guthlac's Monastery. A map drawn in 1610 shows no buildings on the site at that time. By 1797 the County Gaol had been built to the north (largely demolished in 1930), and in 1834 the Hereford Union Workhouse was built to the east - this now forms part of the County Hospital. The site is shown as open ground on plans produced in 1757, 1858 and 1886. A carriage shed was built on part of the site in 1906; this was demolished during the ?1950s, at which time the area became a car park. Thus the site was probably fields or gardens until the early 20th century, and accordingly an archaeological evaluation was not considered necessary. It was, however, recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during any ground disturbances. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM20129
