Abstract:
A desk-top assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of proposed development to the east of Ancaster Road, Bourne. Evidence for prehistoric activity in the area was represented by flint artefacts found on the development site. However, it is possible that these were introduced to the site upon construction of the railway in the 19th century. Romano-British occupation of the region was identified to the south and south-west of the site, and included pottery kilns associated with a small town. Car Dyke, a Romano-British waterway that had banks either side was likely to be affected by the development. Bourne became a small medieval town, with a castle and an Augustinian Priory, it was an important regional pottery producing centre from the 14th to 16th century. Finds from the period included stone carvings, metalwork and pottery. A 19th century railway embankment constructed across the site was flattened in 1956. The present ground conditions suggested fair preservation of any surviving archaeological deposits. Recent intrusion into the site was represented by two storm drains. [Au(abr)]
