Abstract: |
An archaeological examination and a condition survey of a town hall dating from 1690 were carried out. The building consisted of a timber framed upper floor with a pitched roof covered in stone tiles. It was open at the ground floor, with the timber frame superstructure supported by fifteen tapered circular stone columns. Fairly well-documented remodelling of the building had occurred in the 19th century. Architectural details were recorded, and a possible blocked window was noted. It was observed that earlier repairs and maintenance methods had in some instances been inappropriate. A schedule of works was recommended, which included extensive repairs to the timbers. [AIP] |
