Abstract: A programme of archaeological investigations was undertaken where historical sources strongly suggested the presence of an ancient manor and 16th century royal palace. This stage of investigations concerned below ground works for foundations and drainage. Three pits and three post-holes were recorded. Pottery fragments which dated from the high to late medieval periods were recovered from one of the pits and one of the post holes. The pits were believed to have been the products of clay extraction, later back-filled with domestic rubbish. [Au(abr)]
