Abstract:
Cheshire County Council commissioned a DMRB Stage 1 environmental assessment of the impact of a new road sited at the eastern edge of Middlewich. The study area comprised the route corridor, through which three route options passed with an additional surrounding study area 500m wide. The assessment found that the potential existed for the discovery of previously unrecorded sites of prehistoric, Roman or medieval date. In particular, archaeological remains might be expected along the route of the Roman road to Chesterton, which passed through the study area and route corridor. The potential for new discoveries was difficult to determine with a degree of certainty due to the lack of previous fieldwork south-east of Middlewich. A modest number of known archaeological sites, predominantly of post-medieval date, were identified within the route corridor. The Yellow Route was favoured, on archaeological grounds, because it followed the existing railway closely, and appeared to offer the least risk of discovery of undisturbed significant but hitherto unknown sites. Of the route options that passed east of the railway, the Middle Route disturbed fewer known sites than the Eastern Route, and would presently be preferred over the Eastern Route, but the significance of some of the known sites was at present uncertain. A site walkover had yet to be undertaken, and would be expected to provide further information on the archaeological potential of the three routes. [Au(abr)]
