Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the re-alignment of a street and associated drainage works. Desk-based assessment, a photographic survey and a watching brief had previously been undertaken, prior to and during the demolition of 21-27 High Street. This work had suggested that surviving roof timbers had belonged to a building of 17th-18th century date. During the re-alignment works, a sandstone property boundary wall which was likely to have dated from the late 18th century and a series of post-medieval deposits and cellars were recorded. A dome-shaped feature, possibly a later 19th century well-cap, was also noted. It was concluded that, although the site was thought to have lain on the periphery of medieval settlement in Bilston, a history of demolition, rebuilding and cellarage appeared to have scoured out and erased evidence of any earlier occupation within the areas observed during the monitoring exercise.
