Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it lay within the historic core of the village of Hollington, and that it appeared not to have undergone recent development. This indicated that, if the site did contain archaeological remains, they could have been reasonably well preserved. No sites had been recorded within Hollington on the SMR, although three deserted medieval villages and a number of moated sites lay in the wider surrounding area, and ridge and furrow had been recorded at several locations. Earthworks noted within the proposal site itself probably represented the result of modern tipping, as they were absent from an aerial photograph taken in 1971. It was recommended that trial trenching should be carried out, as it was felt that the modern tipping would have rendered the site unsuitable for geophysical survey. [AIP] |
