Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the renewal of a water main in the vicinity of a church, which lay to the south of the Saxon and medieval port and settlement of Watchet. Human burials had been found at a site in the area, and Dark Age settlement in the immediate vicinity of the church may have been indicated by the finding of a Byzantine coin dated AD 540-1 within or adjacent to the churchyard, and by the church's dedication to St Decuman, a Dark Age British saint. A holy well, known as St Decuman's Well, lay slightly downslope from the church. During the watching brief, a layer of cobbles was observed. This may have represented a track, although local sources indicated that similar cobble layers were common in the area. A deposit containing modern brick, 19th century pottery, patches of lime mortar and a fragment of medieval encaustic floor tile, which was probably of 13th-14th century date, was also recorded. [AIP]
