Abstract: |
The assessment concluded that the archaeological potential of the site for the Roman period could be defined as good. 19th century finds suggested that a Roman period inhumation cemetery was uncovered on part of the site and numerous finds of Roman material had been made in the immediate vicinity of the site. Throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods the site probably lay in open agricultural land. Between c.1750 and 1840 the frontage of the site was developed with a number of houses. In c.1832 the site was worked for brickearth. This would have had a severe and widespread archaeological impact. Although partly developed for a railway link the bulk of the site was believed to have been undeveloped until after 1956. [Au(abr)] |
