Abstract: |
A desk top study of the proposed site of a golf course was undertaken. A probable Bronze Age axe and flints dating from the Upper Palaeolithic or the Early Mesolithic had been found at the site. Aerial photographs had revealed the presence of ring ditches, whilst further cropmarks corresponded with field boundaries shown on a map of 1844. Groups of undated linear cropmarks and dark patches had also been noted. An area of small humps and ridges, previously unrecorded, was noted during a site visit. In the surrounding area, early prehistoric flints, Iron Age pottery, a possible Roman villa and the projected route of a Roman road had been recorded. A medieval village had existed at Theale. It was concluded that the proposed golf course did not appear to pose an immediate threat to the majority of the remains identified, although construction of a clubhouse and access road would damage a series of cropmarks.
