Abstract: |
Sample trenches were excavated to evaluate land proposed for development on Holywell Hill. Medieval deposits were revealed in three of the four trenches excavated. A medieval pit dating to the 13th to 14th century was found 52 metres back from the street frontage, behind The White Hart Hotel. Two 13th to 14th century layers were identified 90 metres back from the street frontage; these layers may have sealed a cobble surface. The remains of a stone building, possibly of 13th to 14th century date were discovered 79 metres back from the street. This building was subsequently dismantled, and a post-built structure was built over its demolition layer, possibly in the 14th-15th century. An 18th-19th century wall foundation was also recorded; this was attributed to a former extension of The White Hart Hotel. [Au] |
