Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated to investigate the foundations of the Chapter House at Wells Cathedral produced evidence of a broad shallow palaeochannel orientated roughly east-west, apparently leading towards the springs to the east of the Cathedral, from which the city of Wells takes its name. Nineteenth century underpinning works to one of the buttresses appeared to have been prompted by the buttress settling into this channel. One of the trenches produced evidence of a blocked doorway and mortar spread which may have represented the door and floor of the fifteenth-century casting house, mentioned in written sources but not identified on any maps of the Cathedral precinct.
