Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a house and garage. The projected line of the town bank, the existence of which had been documented since 1158, passed across the south-eastern edge of the site. Nearby excavations had established the existence of the town defences as an earthwork bank and ditch at two locations. During the evaluation, the existence of an embankment which probably represented the medieval defensive bank was demonstrated. A possible slight ditch and an accumulated medieval horizon provided evidence of medieval activity to the north of the embankment, which was probably related to occupation. Post-medieval pitting and post-holes were also identified. It was concluded that the proposed development would be unlikely to affect the surviving remnants of the town bank, but that post-medieval features would be disturbed. The features were not considered to be of major archaeological importance, but it was noted that the evaluation had failed to demonstrate their full nature and extent. [AIP] |
