Abstract:
A desk-based archaeological assessment was carried out in connection with the proposed residential development of the site. The proposed development area covered about 2.7ha and lay on level ground bounded on all sides by thorn hedges. The assessment indicated that there had been activity around the proposed development area since early times. Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman remains were known in the vicinity of the proposed development area. Watling Street Roman road ran about 300m to the south. There was little evidence for medieval activity within the proposed development area. It was likely that the proposed development area was used for agricultural purposes during this period. The Ashby de la Zouch Canal was built in the early years of the 18th century and lay immediately north of the site. No evidence was found for the alleged Second World War pillbox on or near the site. There was medium potential for prehistoric and Roman activity within the proposed development site. There was little evidence for any medieval activity here and it was likely that the site was in agricultural use then. In view of the close proximity of several sites dating form the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman periods, it was recommended that further investigation, in the form of geophysical survey of the proposed development area, be undertaken. Depending on results, trial trenching may be necessary. [Au(abr)]
