Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation was undertaken across the north part of the Market Place. The excavations indicated the presence of archaeological remains over the majority of the area investigated. These consisted of the remains of cobbled surfaces and make-up layers from the medieval and post-medieval periods. Boundary features and pits were also present. Over the northern part of the site, substantial archaeological deposits were identified at depths of up to 1.5m below ground level, including rich organic layers in an anaerobic state of preservation. Substantial quantities of archaeological artefacts were recovered. Excavation was restricted to the depth of disturbance of the proposed development. Archaeological Services recommended that undisturbed deposits should be covered with terram and sand before reinstatement. [Au(abr)] |
