Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. Cartographic and documentary evidence showed that the site was certainly developed by the third quarter of the 17th century and probably from much earlier. The evidence suggested that the area was redeveloped in the 17th century. It was possible that as the medieval buildings lay outside the Civil War defences they were levelled at that time. Similar clearances were thought to have occurred around modern Bedminster Parade to the south of the city. 19th century descriptions of the area showed it to have declined into a mix of rather squalid poor quality housing and commercial enterprise. The site itself had become completely commercial by the middle of the 19th century. By 1902, the tenements along the Gloucester Lane had been demolished and the warehouse occupying the site extended to the line of the street. The warehouse had been demolished by 1921 and the site remained vacant for a number of years. It was possible that a fire, claimed to have occurred in the 1930's, in fact happened around 1920 thus accounting for the site's omission from the street directories in 1921. Towards Braggs Lane the street was stepped back possibly to its line in the medieval period. There was no evidence to suggest that the building formerly occupying the site had basements. [Au(adp)]
