Abstract: |
An evaluation was undetaken on the site which lay adjacent to the remains of the Augustinian Priory of Markby, founded about 1160 and dissolved in 1534. Just south of the development area lay the 16th century parish church, remains of the priory being incorporated into the building which was the only thatched church in Lincolnshire. Only one archaeological featue was revealed during the evaluation, a plough mark at the north side of the area, although no date for this was available. Surviving land boundaries were also evident on the surface, and on the basis of those, it was possible that the Church Farm compound was part of the priory complex. The function of the land was unclear although it seemed probable that the area served an insubstantial use, such as gardens or orchards. [Au(adp)] |
