Abstract: |
A survey of the timber frame of Old Rufford Hall in advance of repair works on the roof structure was undertaken. Recording was carried out using a combination of manual and instrument survey techniques. There was no evidence found to suggest that the present structure incorporated an older building formerly occupying the site. Stylistic dating evidence was found for the main timber frame of the building. This suggested the possibility of a later date of construction than had hitherto been favoured, but more recent information again favouring the earlier chronology was found. It was felt that the construction of the Great Hall took place in the very late 15th or early 16th century. In addition the opportunity was taken to examine several of the more architecturally problematic areas of the structure. [Au(adp)] |
