Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the propossed site of a housing development identified that numerous finds of prehistoric artefacts had been made in the surrounding area, and that three Bronze Age barrows lay to the north-east, on Horsell Common. A Romano-British farming settlement and a Roman coin had also been recorded in the area, but no Saxon or medieval remains were known. Prior to 1899, when the Woking Victoria Hospital had been opened, the site had lain within open agricultural land. It was concluded that the demolition and clearance of the hospital buildings was likely to have had a severe archaeological impact, so that the remaining archaeological potential of the site was considered to be negligible. It was recommended that no further archaeoogical mitigation measures shoud be implemented. [AIP] |
