Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the seeking of planning permission for residential redevelopment. The cartographic and historic evidence indicated that the site lay in or close to the historic core of the medieval and early post-medieval settlement. This part of the High Street was occupied at least as early as the 18th century. This was reflected in the inclusion of the site within an archaeological interest area in the Borough Unitary Development Plan. For other periods later than the Palaeolithic, there were very few entries in the GLSMR for the near vicinity of the site and the chances of encountering finds and deposits of these dates was very limited on this small plot. The presence of several finds of Palaeolithic stone tools nearby and the location of the site of a gravel terrace known to be rich in finds of this early period was an area of interest. Again, the chance of encountering any Palaeolithic material was small, and in-situ deposits very much less so, but for this period archaeological sites were extremely rare and poorly understood.
