Abstract:
In June 1995 and July 1996 a watching brief was maintained during the excavation of a surface water drainage system at St Mary Magdalene Church. Significant archaeological activity was not encountered within the pipe trench. Victorian demolition and rebuilding of the southern and western side of the church appeared to have destroyed any evidence of earlier foundations. A medieval pottery sherd of 13th-14tn century date, and a small quantity of late medieval and post-medieval sherds were recovered from the pipe trenches. A small amount of disturbed human bone was recorded and reburied. Three soakways excavated within the graveyard located ten unmarked burials thought to date from the 19th or early 20th century. One grave fill contained 8 redeposited medieval sherds dating to the 12th-14th century together with a single post-medieval pottery sherd. [Au]
