Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken on land in the grounds of Marlborough College. The archaeological features comprised a broad V-shaped ditch four metres deep and cut by two later re-cuts. It was suggested that this was likely to have been the defensive ditch to a second bailey thought to have been added to the Norman motte and bailey castle. In addition, eleven pits, a robbed foundation for a rectangular building, smaller gullies and isolated postholes were recorded. These were thought to have been associated with the 13th century burghage. The artefacts recovered from the principal features comprised pottery from 12th and 14th centuries and iron objects.
