Abstract:
The church of St Martins in Kirklevington contained pre-conquest decorated stonework and the village itself was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Five trial trenches were excavated as part of a scheme of archaeological investigation carried out in advance of a planning application for a new vicarage on the site. A geophysical survey in the area of the development identified several tentative anomalies and the trenches were located over these, and also in blank areas, to investigate whether archaeological remains were present. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that three of the anomalies which were tentatively identified in the geophysical survey report as wall footings were in fact walls. However, these incorporated cinders and broken modern bricks in their make-up. A trench situated against the north-eastern edge of the garden closest to the graveyard of the church located wall footings of an earlier date and it was suggested that this was part of an earlier boundary to the churchyard. Medieval pottery sherds were recovered from a homogenous subsoil located within two of the trenches. The evaluation failed to identify any pre-Conquest or any significant medieval remains and on the basis of this it was therefore considered that there were no significant archaeological constraints on development in this area. However, because of the proximity of the site to the churchyard a precautionary watching brief of any groundworks was recommended. [Au(abr)]
