Abstract:
ASC Ltd carried out an archaeological watching brief and investigations during the construction of a water main running from Swanbourne to Wing. Initial desk-based research had shown that the area had not been archaeologically surveyed, and that little archaeological information was available. Geophysical survey along the route revealed a small number of areas that were potentially archaeologically sensitive. These were stripped under archaeological supervision and investigated. One area near Richmond Lodge, Mursley, was found to contain features of Iron Age and medieval date. The location in the survey of extensive archaeological features of possible late prehistoric or Roman date adjacent to Wing airfield led to the re-routing of this part of the water main and the use of alternative construction methods to reduce damage to the archaeology. The watching brief located two areas of archaeological features that were not detected by the geophysical survey. One, near Mursley Hall Farm, produced a small amount of prehistoric pottery. The other, south of the Richmond Lodge site, contained pits of undetermined date. [Au(abr)]
