Abstract: |
The archaeological impact of the proposed blocking of 'swallow-holes' in the River bed of the River Rye was assessed. It was shown that recorded features of archaeological interest were present both within the present river course and close to its banks between Mill Bridge, Sproxton and Rye Farm. A small number of archaeological artefacts had also been recovered from the immediate vicinity. Civil engineering works in connection with the proposed sealing of swallow holes on the river bed was also suggested as affecting medieval and post-medieval features, both during mechanical and vehicular acces to the river edge and in the course of bed operations.
