Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of a new sewer route between Newark and Coddington. The western end of the route (between Newark and the A1) crossed the anticipated course of the First Line of Circumvallation, a Civil War earthwork. A substantial ditch was observed in the trenching on Brunel Drive, which produced no artefactual dating evidence, but its character and posisiton suggested that it was probably the south-east tip ot a redoubt (fort) forming part of the First Line of Circumvallation, the first time it had been located on the eastern side of the town.
