Abstract:
The assessment site lay within the historic core of Roman and medieval Exeter. A considerable proportion of the site was provided in the 1970s with deep basements in which no significant archaeological deposits were likely to have survived. The Centre occupied about 12% of the area of the early Roman fortress of the Second Augustan Legion. The core assessment area contained the remains of at least 15 major timber buildings and several streets and alleys. The area apparently remained open ground from the early 5th century to the late 9th or early 10th century. The archaeological deposits preserved from the Saxon and later medieval periods largely took the form of rubbish pits, wells and industrial features. In the 16th and 17th centuries Exeter had reached its greatest period of prosperity. The 1830s saw the construction of Queen Street and the Higher Market. Much clearance took place to either side of Pancras Lane in the 1930s. [Au(adp)]
