Abstract:
Gradiometer survey was undertaken in two fields close to the farming settlement of Pennance. Detailed gradiometry was undertaken with the aim of locating any detectable anomalies of archaeological interest. This survey formed part of a wider archaeological evaluation being undertaken by Cornwall Archaeological Unit in advance of the enlargement of existing china clay workings. Within Area 1 a number of linear and short ditch-type responses, which were suggestive of former field boundaries, were detected that were of archaeological potential. The data contained several broad amorphous anomalies. These may have had an archaeological explanation but a natural origin was thought more plausible. Trends were noted within the data and though some may have been archaeological, many were thought to reflect recent agricultural practice. Survey in Area 2 recorded a complex of linear, curvilinear and pit-type anomalies within an area of increased magnetic response of archaeological interest. Whilst these appeared to suggest a marked degree of plough-damage, they may have formed part of a system of enclosures and a possible foci of settlement activity. There was also the suggestion that these may have been multiphase, however, this remained tentative. A magnetically strong response may have indicated burnt remains, although it may have been due to near surface magnetic boulders. The data also contained numerous trends; given the archaeological context, these may have also been of interest, although this interpretation was speculative. [Au(abr)]
