Abstract:
An archaeological and cultural heritage assessment was undertaken in response to a proposal to enhance the public open space at Sunniside Gardens. The site lay in an area of land between the historic villages of Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth, with both having well documented early medieval origins. The earliest evidence for activity on the site itself was for its use as agricultural land and gardens of a mansion house in the early eighteenth century. This house and land belonged to the Maude family, who were eminent members of the Quaker community in Sunderland from the late 17th century. The Maude Mansions and gardens were sold in 1843 or 1844 and the land was used to lay out West Sunniside and Sunninside Gardens. The gardens appeared to have been laid out as a private shrubbery for the residents of West Sunniside. Over the course of the late 19th century and early 20th century, development encroached on the shrubbery and the present form of the area was established. In that the proposals for groundwork were restricted and that there was no evidence for past use of the site other than as agricultural land or gardens, no further archaeological study of the area was recommended.
