Abstract:
<summary>A management plan was devised for the site in the light of the results of the previous two years' work at the pagan Anglo-Saxon cemetery. This aimed at securing the site's future preservation by redefining the Scheduled area. Further excavation close to the Scheduled mound was undertaken, in an area that was too damaged for preservation {italon}in situ{italoff}. Plough damage was great and no cremation burials were found, though a group of pottery sherds and fragments of cremated bone found deep in a rabbit burrow testified to their former existence. One possible and six definite inhumation graves were excavated, one being a small boat burial which had survived as a sand stain. This grave of a possible adolescent also contained numerous grave goods. Adjacent to the grave was a pit containing a horse's head, bridle and bit. Six "burnt stone features" were also located and have been interpreted as a form of oven, either for the cremation of bodies or for the preparation of food for a funeral feast. Limited excavation around the fringe of the surviving tumulus indicated that it was not surrounded by a ditch but may have had quarry pits. A further mound, still partially standing, was identified immediately adjacent to the Scheduled mound. {italon}Sec(abr/adp)(17b){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} SNP007
