Abstract:
A detailed archaeological assessment was undertaken on a 200m wide corridor centred on the proposed new bypass. The area is rich with surviving remains of early-to post-medieval agricultural field patterns. This report assesses the impact on this considerable village which is an ancient township and parochial chapelry. The evolution of its landscape are discussed as well as its manorial history and the archaeological potential of a wider environmental envelope. This includes Neolithic finds and the Roman Road known as the Devil's Causeway. Site investigation of the field enclosures revealed evidence of field boundaries and ridge and furrow. The visual impact to the setting of the Listed Building of Embleton Hall is also discussed. [AIP]
