Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on works associated with the demolition of an existing boiler room and the subsequent construction of an extension to the north side of St. Andrew's Church. The fabric of the existing church was recorded, where a new door was to be inserted through the north wall, as part of the development. Two inhumations, one adult, the other juvenile were recorded. The adult skeleton was dated to the 19th century, or later, by a piece of window glass recovered from the grave fill. The juvenile inhumation was undated. No other archaeological features were observed, although four sherds of pottery dated to between the 11th century and the 13th century AD were found residually within the grave containing the adult inhumation. The interior and exterior elevation of the north wall of the church, was drawn and photographed, where it was directly affected by development. The finished blocks in the northern wall almost certainly dated to the Rev. Thomas Butlers restoration in the 1860s. The foundations may have dated to the 13th century AD. [Au(abr)]
