Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a quarry extension identified that a number of archaeological features dating from the post-medieval period lay within the proposal area. These consisted entirely of circular or sub-circular mounds and hollows, some with associated slag heaps, representing the remnants of coal extraction activity. In the surrounding area, a Mesolithic flint core, a number of Neolithic flints, two Bronze Age cairns and a Roman coin hoard had been recorded. It was concluded that it was difficult to make an accurate decision concerning the regional significance of the post-medieval features, as no in-depth assessment of the Lancashire coal field had been made. However, it was thought that the overall archaeological implications for the quarry development were limited. [Au(adp)] |
