Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of the site. The site was situated approximately 250m to the west of the Saxon defences of Wallingford in an area of flat and undisturbed land which would presumably have been of topographic importance to the settlement throughout all periods, representing in particular an agricultural potential. 15 trenches were investigated which revealed evidence for natural deposits with one modern cut land drain being identified Trench 2. A single partially articulated bovine torso was also identified within the base of Trench 6 and, whilst it did not appear to lie within a cut feature and no related dating was recorded, the depth of the assemblage and the fact that it appeared to be sealed by subsoil suggested a prehistoric date.
