Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken. Two archaeological sites were known to lie within the site: a patch of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation and an undated iron ore scatter. The Neolithic, Romano-British and medieval periods were well represented within the site. Several flint scatters were recorded in the vicinity, with the possibility that more existed and represented a relatively dense concentration of prehistoric activity, but did not necessarily correspond with sub-surface archaeological features. The landscape had obviously been densely settled and more sites may well have existed. The Iron Age and Saxon periods were not as well represented as other periods. Significant medieval archaeology was present. A number of sites were listed on the SMR. The chapel and moat near the southwestern corner may have extended into the development area and the deserted medieval village and Norman church 500m to the east reflected major settlement. There was the possibility that post-medieval evidence would be present. [Au(adp)]
