Abstract:
An appraisal of the area of proposed residential development at Spen Moor identified eleven archaeological sites within the vicinity. The majority of these sites were farmsteads, other small settlement sites or collieries of post-medieval date, but also included part of the course of the Roman road between Manchester and Ribchester. Five of these sites were located either within or immediately adjacent to the boundaries of the proposed development. The most significant of these sites was the course of the Roman road, which was considered to be of regional importance. Although the course of the road was identifiable between Bolton Road and Higher Spen Moor, previous archaeological excavations at this location yielded no positive results. Roadside enclosures or field boundaries within the area of the development proposals could not be discounted. One of the new newt ponds proposed to the north of Higher Spen Moor was currently located on the route of the Roman road. All of the three farmstead or settlement sites within or immediately adjacent to the proposed boundaries of the development (Higher, Middle and Lower Spen Moor) and the colliery site were of 18th or 19th century date and considered to have been of local importance. None of these sites would be directly affected by the development proposals. The potential for previously unrecorded sites of prehistoric, medieval or post-medieval date within the development area was considered to be limited. [Au(abr)]
