Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed recreation of a 19th century house that had been seriously damaged by fire in 1963 and was subsequently demolished. The assessment aimed to provide an account of the development of the house and associated and provide the historical context for the property in order to assess the case for re-establishing a country house and to examine the known and potential archaeological and historical evidence for the property in order to assess the potential impact of the works. An earlier medieval and Tudor house had previously lain within the Park. The study indicated that the location of a medieval and Tudor house at Nyn was almost certainly not within the footprint of the 19th century house, but lay to the east beneath former areas of lawn and garden. The nature of construction (including cellars), was likely to have seriously damaged any earlier archaeological evidence. The report argued that the reinstatement of a house at Nyn Park would not have an adverse affect on the surrounding countryside, or the archaeological and historical element within it. [Au(adp)] |
