Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a link road. Evidence for the manufacture of clay pipes had been recorded nearby. The Tithe Map of 1838 indicated the area to have been undeveloped at this date, although a map of the same area dated 1841 showed considerable development. The northern part of the site appeared at this time to have been laid out as ornamental gardens attached to the newly-developed Furnham House, whilst a terrace of houses had been constructed adjacent to the southern end of the site. By 1904, an extension to Furnham House lay within the site, and additional buildings had been constructed along the present boundary between the two halves of the site. During the evaluation, two prominent east-west walls assumed to represent the remains of the extension to Furnham House were revealed. A brick-built drain and two further structures were also observed. The structures were assumed to have been of recent date. Five sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from a spread of clay which may have represented the remains of a feature, or may have comprised imported make-up. The bulk of the site provve to have been archaeologically sterile. [AIP] |
