Abstract: |
A desktop survey was undertaken of the site of the Gardens and Gazebo of the former Southmead Manor House to assess the archaeological implications of proposed residential development on the site. The study showed that the site lay in an area where archaeological finds dating from the prehistoric and Romano-British periods had been recovered, and that the area of the 'south meadow' was owned by the Augustinian nunnery of St Mary Magdalen in Bristol who leased the land and the manor to the Haynes family in the early 16th century. The manor and estate were sold many times, with 'great improvements' being made in the late 18th century. During the 19th century the estate was divided into smaller lots, and both formal and naturalistic elements were added to the Manor Gardens by Dr Stanley Baldock in the late 19th century. Many of the original garden features were retained including the ruined late 17th century Gazebo. It was at this time that the lower garden area was converted into a 'wild' garden. In 1910-12 the house was almost entirely rebuilt, although some earlier features were retained. During the 20th century subsequent buying and selling of the house resulted in the separation of the west and southern areas of garden from the Manor House. The Gazebo, boundary wall and steps, and both levels of gardens had at the time of the desktop study reverted back to nature being overgrown and wild. Further evaluation work was recommended. [AIP] |
