Abstract: |
Evaluation of two areas was carried out at the proposed site of a car park, as part of a continuing programme of archaeological work. The site lay within an area which may have contained the remains of a house and garden, shown on a map of c. 1768. Two trial trenches were excavated beyond the head of an existing lake, in order to test the suggestion that it had formerly extended over a greater area. Dumped 20th century rubbish and demolition debris which may have indicated infilling of a former lake area was observed. Of two trenches excavated in an area to the north west, one revealed probable garden soil and a layer of tile and brick. The brick represented waster material from a kiln, and may have been contemporary with the construction of the main Botleys Mansion. The tile may also have derived from waster material. It was concluded that further archaeological work would be necessary. [AIP] |
